Band Birds of Play with their instruments around a campfire.

Alex paul and the birds of play

Genre: Bluegrass, Blues, Folk, and Funk

Birds of Play is a musical collaboration born from a mutual love of desert canyons, raging rivers, rocky mountaintops, and juice picnics.  These multi-instrumentalists and dear friends weave together a lyric-forward, seamless mixture of bluegrass, blues, folk, and funk.

‪Rife with a dynamic melange of sentimentality and playfulness, Birds of Play's original music will take you‪ on a joyous journey filled with tales of love lost and found, ballads of wild places, and the radical idea that being happy for no reason at all, is reason enough.

We’re up there having a great time making music.” Since its inception, the group has been leaderless, “which is to say that we have seven leaders,” says member Nancy deCastro. “We all are responsible for finding music, for directing, for setting rehearsals and for doing what needs to be done. We all bring different talents to the group.” The present group includes Suzan Beraza, Nancy DeCastro, Donna Burd Fernald, Judith Kohin, Jen Sher Birrittella, Ulli Sir Jesse, Deb Stevens and Rosemerry Wahtola Trommer.
