Artist Mini Interview: Celeste Bickford

What does “being an artist” mean to you today?

Being an artist means paying close attention. It’s a practice of witnessing the land, light, and atmosphere and translating that experience into form. My work is a way of honoring places that feel sacred to me.

What influences outside of art shape your practice?

The mountains and deserts of the American West shape everything I do. Long days outside, hiking, kayaking, watching weather move across a landscape, and quiet time in nature all influence how I see light, color, and scale.

What part of yourself feels most present in the work you’re showing?

A sense of reverence and stillness. I’m drawn to places that feel quiet and powerful, and I try to translate that feeling into the paintings.

If you could have a conversation with one artist, alive or deceased, who would it be and why?

Georgia O’Keeffe. I admire how she developed a visual language rooted deeply in place and solitude. Her relationship with the landscape of the Southwest feels very aligned with the questions I’m exploring in my own work.

What is your favorite quote or saying?

A haiku excerpt from the poem "Three Dharma Poems" by Diane Di Prima,

"my faith—
what is it but the ancient dreams
of wild ones in the mountains?"

What are your prep or practice rituals to get you into the artistic headspace?

Spending time outside helps the most. Walking, observing light, and letting my attention slow down. Once I’m in the studio, I usually begin quietly and let the painting reveal its direction.

How do you navigate doubt or creative blocks when they show up?

Usually by continuing to work. Doubt is part of the process, so I try not to treat it as a signal to stop, but simply something that appears while the work is developing.

Where can people follow your work or learn more about you?
