Artist Mini Interview: Kaytha Coker Potts
What does “being an artist” mean to you today?
Celebrating and meditating on the things in the world that are lovely, true, noble, pure and excellent.
What keeps you making art, even on hard days?
Focusing on the beauty in nature.
What influences outside of art shape your practice?
This amazingly gorgeous place we live in, mountains, animals, flowers, rivers, streams, snow, clouds, the colors of the sunset when God is painting the sky.
What part of yourself feels most present in the work you’re showing?
My uniqueness.
What does art allow you to say that words cannot?
Textures and colors (like that found in nature) often express what words cannot.
If you could have a conversation with one artist, alive or deceased, who would it be and why?
Van Gogh. I’d love to know a little more about what his thoughts were behind the “madness”
What is your favorite quote or saying?
The heavens declare the glory of God. The sky above proclaims His majesty. Day to day pours out splendor and night to night reveals knowledge.
I think of this verse often living here. The glory of the sky-whose shifting hues and shadows are always creating a beautiful painting of color and light on the mountains, streams, trees and valleys below- never ceases to amaze me. I often watch the sunset like I would watch a fireworks display.
What is your secret talent?
Not sure…. Does being a cat rescuer count?
What are your prep or practice rituals to get you into the artistic headspace?
I often listen to podcasts, sermons and music while working.
What part of the creative process do you enjoy the most—and which part challenges you?
I love creating things that are different and unique but am often challenged and overwhelmed by the amount of ideas, mediums and thoughts I have about art direction.
What role does experimentation play in your process?
I experiment quite a bit. It’s what led me to my current medium and process.
How do you navigate doubt or creative blocks when they show up?
Putting aside a certian piece I’m “blocked on”, working on multiple pieces at a time, experimenting with new ideas/media.
What are you currently working on?
A could of large yarn and fabric bear pieces.
What are you excited about exploring next, creatively or personally?
Painting again.
Where can people follow your work or learn more about you?
