Artist Mini Interview: Jean Vertefeuille

What does “being an artist” mean to you today?

Allows me to express my creative energies in subjects I care deeply about.

What keeps you making art, even on hard days?

My love of subject and expression.

What influences outside of art shape your practice?

Nature, always nature.

What part of yourself feels most present in the work you’re showing?

My deep connection to Nature and wildlife.

What does art allow you to say that words cannot?

I can show the mystery of weather in wild places, movement of animals.

If you could have a conversation with one artist, alive or deceased, who would it be and why?

Matt Smith because he is so articulate when he speaks of art and he creates truly correct pieces.

What is your secret talent?

Sensing energy in Nature.

What are your prep or practice rituals to get you into the artistic headspace?

Listening to/watching birds, water

What part of the creative process do you enjoy the most—and which part challenges you?

Using thick paint after the block in. Challenge is to slow down when I get really into the piece.

What role does experimentation play in your process?

I experiment some on every piece.

How do you navigate doubt or creative blocks when they show up?

Put away the piece for awhile and work on something else.

What are you currently working on?

A marshe series.

What are you excited about exploring next, creatively or personally?

More intuitive, semi-abstract work.

Where can people follow your work or learn more about you?

Facebook, Instagram, website: jvertefeuillestudio.com
