HAPPY HOUR AT THE SHOW BAR: DESERT HOLLOW

Grab a cocktail and enjoy live music on the patio of the SHOW Bar at the Sheridan Opera House on Sunday, August 27 from 7-9 p.m. with Desert Hollow.

This event is free and open to the public.

The name Desert Hollow is a definition for the geographical and artistic influences of this traveling folk duo, Xander Hitzig and Nicole Olney teamed up in love and music a few years back. Her lilting vocal seems to melt into the sturdy, eclectic musical beds of each tune. His voice is as deliberate as an old-school folkie singing with no amplification. When the two come together in harmony, it’s as if they have known each other all their lives.

The Sensational Barnes Brothers

The Telluride Mountain Village Owners Association (TMVOA) has announced the return of the Sunset Music Series for the 2023 summer season in Mountain Village. The event, which celebrates its 23rd anniversary this year, has been recognized as a top ten outdoor summer music series by 10Best of USA Today, making it a must-attend for music lovers.

The Sensational Barnes Brothers are a melting pot of the old and the new. As Pop Matters states, “The brothers run through a spectrum of moods and modes in their gospel soul, often bridging the gap between, say, the Soul Stirrers and Stax, all the while keeping a local flavor.” The brothers are able to dive deep into their roots, creating a sound that reflects the music of their history, all the while drawing in a modern-day audience.

From playing in their family living room to recording their first album from a legendary 1970s catalog, The Sensational Barnes Brothers have created a place for themselves in the music industry. “We performed a lot,” recalls Courtney. “In our performances, my mom and dad would do the first section. They would sing, and we would be the background. Then in the next set it flipped over to where the children would do our thing, and that would be the Barnes Family concert.” Before the release of their debut album, the brothers solidified their role as musicians by working with legends of soul and R&B as well as modern day award winning artists.

Regional Music Feature with Easy Jim

The Telluride Mountain Village Owners Association (TMVOA) has announced the return of the Sunset Music Series for the 2023 summer season in Mountain Village. The event, which celebrates its 23rd anniversary this year, has been recognized as a top ten outdoor summer music series by 10Best of USA Today, making it a must-attend for music lovers.

“Settle back easy, Jim…” The words of Robert Hunter in the song “Althea” seemed to fit the mold of the band when it began in the fall of 2018 . The laid back group of musicians from Gunnison and Crested Butte, Colorado found a common love for the music with one another and a desire to learn and perform the material. The six piece ensemble features the same instrumentation as the Grateful Dead including two drummers and four part vocal harmonies. Easy Jim is known for their exciting original improvisations, high energy performances, and attention to detail. No two shows are ever the same and it’s always Easy Jim’s mission to provide a visceral concert experience that pays tribute to one of the most infamous rock ‘n’ roll bands, The Grateful Dead .

HAPPY HOUR AT THE SHOW BAR: SOL CHASE

Grab a cocktail and enjoy live music on the patio of the SHOW Bar at the Sheridan Opera House on Thursday, June 29 from 7-9 p.m. with Sol Chase.

This event is free and open to the public.

Sol Chase was born into a tribe of hippies and musicians and learned to play folk songs in the fields and forests of Europe during early years on the road with his parents. The family band would venture into towns for regular busking sets, and street performing became Sol’s primary medium of musical expression for many years. After moving to Colorado, Sol fell deeply in love with the bluegrass tradition of campfire jams and festivals that rings through the Rocky Mountains.

A mandolinist and songwriter from a young age, Sol developed his musical style with mentors across many genres and walks of life, from New England old time players to jazz guitarists. His longest stint of musical development came from seven years spent in the “Live Music Capital of the World”, Austin, Texas. He founded and led several bands during his time there, refining a sound that mixes traditional Americana with psychedelic ‘jamgrass’.

Lifted to new heights by the collaborative and rich scene, Sol recorded his first solo project in 2022. Recorded in Austin with a cohort of the city’s best acoustic players and engineered by Charles Godfrey (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Sublime, Whiskey Myers), “The Eclectic Life of an Only Child” is a scrapbook of musical memories, truths, and fictions gathered through a lifetime of playing.

Sol has recorded with Third Eye Blind, shared the stage with The California Honeydrops, and opened for Shinyribs and The Sweet Lillies, among many others. Since leaving Austin in 2022, Sol and his partner Evergreen have traveled across continents in search of new heights and new pals to make and share music with.

New Orleans brass band-meets-Mardi Gras Indian outfit Cha Wa radiates the energy of the city’s street culture. “My People,” the band’s follow up to their Grammy-nominated album “Spyboy,” feels like pure joy, a distillation of generations of New Orleans expression. But it also never fails to remind us how hard-won that joy was and still is: not least in the tense, funky and explosive title track, with its declaration “My people, we’re still here.”

“Mardi Gras Indian songs are inherently songs about freedom,” the band’s drummer Joe Gelini says. “And that struggle is as relevant today as it’s ever been.” Popmatters describes the band as "a grand gumbo of singing, intoxicating rhythms, and deep funk grooves that are impossible to resist.”

Fronted by married songwriting duo Kim West and Ryan Devlin, the bands melodies and harmonies exude intimacy. The swirling synths of keyboardist/vocalist West cut through the heaviness of Devlin’s fuzzed out guitars like a neon sign in the night. Bassist Luke Ragnar fills in the bottom end with stylishly inventive bass lines that perfectly compliment Nick Krivchenia’s grounded and authoritative drums. With Ragnar’s voice in the mix, the band’s hallmark three part harmonies radiate. Lyrically, Devlin and West trade off telling personal stories of doubt and existential anxiety, while always keeping a hopeful eye to the future. Devlin’s gravel filled voice alongside West’s honey dipped melodies is a shot of raw whiskey spiking a cherry soda. The resulting alchemy is performed with a professional aplomb that not only highlights Smokey Brights stellar musicianship, but the genuine passion and love the group has for their music, each other, and their audience. A Smokeys show is rife with dancing, dad jokes, monstrous guitar solos, and the best thrift shop fashion from across the world. Asses will be shook, hearts will be beautifully broken, and bartenders will be tipped. Also, their merch guy is hot.
