1. Updates!
We are very happy to announce that Penelope Gleason of Bootdoctors and Sharon Caplan of Deva Yoga Studio (and the Washington DC ballet) joined our board in June.  With the addition of these two lovely women, we have a well-rounded board with superb arts insights!  Also we are pleased to welcome Evan Tueller as our Student Representative to the Board and Lindsey Kreft as our new Manager for the Stronghouse Studios Artists’ Cooperative!  We are also adding a “Kiddie Korner” to our Stronghouse openings, where children of any age are welcome to draw while their parents peruse our latest opening!

2. Small Grants: Additional funding for artists and arts organizations
TCAH announced increased funding this year to artists and arts and humanities organizations working in San Miguel County.  Due to the generosity of our funding sources, Small Grants were offered for up to $2,000 in project funding and $500 for education fellowships.  We awarded $7,500 in March; $2,000 to graduating seniors in arts scholarships in May; and $16,500 to artists and organizations in September.  Through Homegrown Performance Series in cooperation with the Colorado Council for the Arts, we awarded $21,250 to local performing arts groups.  This amounts to a total of $47,250 in grant funding allocated by TCAH in Telluride!

We were excited to see our Small Grants and Homegrown Performance Grants being used this spring for Sheridan Opera House Young People’s Theatre presentation of “Annie Get Your Gun” in April, and Telluride Dance Academy’s 5th annual Spring Recital at the Palm in May.  Summer Grants included Telluride Mountain Sprouts’ starting a one-week intensive “Theatre Magic Drama Intensive” for preschoolers; and Telluride Academy Mudd Butts’ continuation of their successful Mystery Theatre Troupe.  Judy Kohin used her fellowship funds to further her study of encaustic painting, and offered a seminar at Stronghouse and a demonstration at Ah-Haa in September after completion of her studies.

We are looking forward to seeing our Small Grants and Homegrown Performance Grants used this fall and winter for Norwood’s Livery Playhouse (Wright Stuff Foundation) starting a drama camp for teens; Dan Hanley’s “Church of Celebritology” free-to-public “one time tent revival” for laughs; Duncan Mackenzie sundial unveiling in Mountain Village;  Valerie Madonia’s “Salon Dance” performance; Rachel Lackey’s kindergarten art poster; Telluride Institute’s “Grandmothers” weekend, part of their October sustainability month; Telluride Historical Museum’s oral histories project on Telluride’s Italian influence, CoolSculpt’s annual event in January in Mountain Village; Jeb Berrier’s holiday performance this December; and Rebecca Pugh/Mountainbirth, $2000 for alternate birthing & childcare seminar in Spanish.

3. Beaux Arts Ball
January blessed us with amazing snow and the arrival of Hazel Miller, here with her band to highlight our 2007 Beaux Arts Ball.  The theme was cabaret, and attendees reveled in hats, boas and beads in a black, red and white theme.  Dancing to the amazing soul siren, and dressed in anything goes!, everyone had a wonderful time.

The Silent Auction raised almost $10,000 and we were proud to be sponsored by American National Bank, Mountain Village Owners’ Association, Nevasca Realty, Inc., and Jim Jenkins and Sharon Caplan.  The 2007 Beaux Arts Ball raised the most money yet for the arts in Telluride.

Look for a great event next January 26th, with Hazel at 7pm at the Sheridan Opera House in town!  It’s the 2007 Beaux Arts Brazilian Carnival: Red Hot + Rio!  Sassy!

4.  Art Walk

TCAH was proud to bring the Telluride Art Walk to locals and visitors alike in 2007.  The Art Walk is a community event in which local studios and galleries agree to stay open “late ‘til 8” the First Thursday of every month (except for off-season).  Stronghouse Studios, Ah-Haa Silver Bell Gallery, the Telluride Gallery of Fine Art, Lustre, Lucas Gallery, Wilderness Wonders, Telluride Historical Museum, Elinoff & Co., Dolce Gallery, and Lyceum Arts participated in Telluride.  Mountain Village venues include Telluride Mountain Gallery and Winston Gallery of Fine Art.  We hope to expand this wonderful collaborative event and further the mission of cultivating a partnership between Telluride businesses and the arts community to promote established and emerging artists, local commerce, and public access to the arts.  We are proud to continue this celebration for  2008!  If interested in joining, email renee@telluridearts.org by Tuesday, October 2d. For more information, visit our website, www.telluridearts.org and click on “Art Walk”.

5.  Stronghouse Studios

Stronghouse Studios has had a great 2007 to date.  August found us at full capacity. January showcased the abstract photography of newcomer Hudson Cress.  February highlighted the encaustic (wax) paintings of Sarah “Sequoia” Gordon, with the best sales to date.  March announced the custom jewelry of Alison Mackey (www.mackeysmark.com), featuring lovely wearable art.  May hosted Adele Hammond during MountainFilm; June showed the wood, glass and metal structures of Daniel Kanow, with July welcoming Brittany Miller’s latest acrylic paintings.  August highlighted Elaine Fischer’s abstracts (her second show with Stronghouse), with September showcasing Sara Chaffin’s inventive drawings.  Congratulations on your first shows, everyone!

During each off-season, we show a group show of our resident Stronghouse Artists (jewelry, drawings, painting and sculpture).  This December, Stronghouse Studios will feature Susan McCormick’s vibrant watercolors.  Each artist’s opening reception occurs the First Thursday of the month, from 5-8 p.m. (coinciding with the Art Walk), and we are pleased to add the “Kiddie Korner” with art supplies for children of any age to draw during our opening receptions.  Stronghouse Studios is open every Thursday from 12 to 6 p.m., so stop by and see what your neighbors and friends are creating!  Stronghouse has over 20 locals participating in an open, loft-like historic setting, and is located at 283 South Fir in Telluride.  For more information about any Stronghouse program, or to join our studio waitlist, please call the Studios Manager at 970-728-8959 or email lindsey@telluridearts.org.

Seminars: We would also like to thank Bruce Gomez (Pastel Artist), Barbel Hacke (Telluride Gallery of Fine Art) and Judy Kohin (Encaustic Artist and “Valley Cows” artist) for their participation in Stronghouse’s new lecture series.  Each of Bruce’s lecture, “How I made it as an artist”; Barbel’s lecture “How to approach a gallery as an artist”; and Judy’s lecture “What is Encaustic Painting” drew approximately 15 attendees in February March, and September, respectively.  Look forward to more seminars next year, including one by Meredith Nemirov on Artist in Residency programs in early April 2008!

6.  Collaboration & Mentorships

One-to-One:  TCAH’s Stronghouse Studios artist cooperative was proud to collaborate with One-to-One to provide Artist Mentors to three local high school students in 2007.  In January, Layton Hebert, hosted a show at the Nugget Theatre of the photography he developed with his Stronghouse mentor, photographer Wyatt GlynnGallerie Framing was kind enough to help him finish his abstract photography.  In May, Julian Misliuc partnered with sculptor Daniel Kanow to work during Mountain Film’s gallery walk.  And Katie Pape worked closely with watercolorist Priscilla Wells to further develop her creative side at Stronghouse Studios!

Ah-Haa: TCAH was also proud to collaborate with Ah-Haa School of Art to sponsor a live auction painting by Brittany Miller as part of their annual fundraiser in late July; provide a darkroom for a children’s photography class in August; and to host Judy Kohin’s informative seminar on encaustic painting before a class at AhHaa in September.

Local Festivals: TCAH also worked alongside MountainFilm to host Adele Hammond during the 2007 event; and TCAH “paired” with the Wine Festival to bring the first annual Wine Festival Arts Fair, hosting over 16 artists and organizations, held July 1st in Elks Park.  Each December, TCAH helps the Telluride Artisan’s Guild produce their Holiday Bazaar at the Telluride High School, showcasing local artists and artisans.

Galleries & Studios: Additionally, TCAH collaborates with 9 other local galleries to produce the Art Walk, whereby local galleries and studios stay open “late ‘til 8” the first Thursday of every (on-season) month, in an effort to cultivate a partnership between Telluride businesses and the arts community to promote established and emerging artists, local commerce, and public access to the arts.

7.  Desktop Fundraising Calendar

Desktop Calendar Fundraiser: TCAH is excited to unveil its newest project, a stand-up, spiral-bound small desktop easel calendar highlighting local artists and their artwork for 2008.  Each elegant colorful image is of the Telluride region or inspired by the Telluride region, and this calendar is the first in a (hopeful) annual calendar!  Because of their size, they tuck nicely into small spaces, such as desktops, computer tables—even kitchen counters—where they function as miniature galleries, with the artwork changing from month to month.

The 2008 calendar, “Close to Home,” highlights paintings, photography and prints by San Miguel County artists Roger Mason, MD Famous Artist, Susan McCormick, Bruce Gomez, Ellen Brody, Meredith Nemirov, Judy Kohin, Leigh Seikel, Kathryn Vinson Tatum, Sheri Worth and Amy Poinsett.  Calendars will be available after November 1st at TCAH (283 South Fir), during Noel Night, at the Holiday Bazaar (Dec. 7-9 at the High School), at Bootdoctors in Mountain Village, and by phone at 728-3930. The calendars come with custom envelopes, ready to send, perfect for a holiday gift.  All proceeds from calendar sales are used to support TCAH programming.  Prices are $12 each or $10 each for orders of 10 or more. For more information and photos of the calendar, visit www.telluridearts.org and click on “2008 Fundraising Calendar” or ask any of our board members for more information!

Members & Support:  Thank you to all who generously donated to the Telluride Council for the Arts and Humanities in 2007 and previous years for your amazing support.   All of the money raised supported TCAH programs, including the Small Grants and Artist Fellowship Program, the Homegrown Performance Series, the Stronghouse Studios artist cooperative, and the Telluride Art Walk.  Our non-profit organization has one of the lowest percentages in Telluride of administrative and fundraising costs (25%).  Fully 75% of the funds raised goes towards programming!  Please see the last page for a list of our donors. We would not exist without the generosity of our local governments, foundations, corporations, individuals, and all of our members like you.  Thanks for a great 2007 so far!   For more information about donations, please visit www.telluridearts.org/support.htm or call 728-3930.
