PAPER MARBLING & ABSTRACTED COLLAGE
Ah Haa School for the Arts | Monday – Wednesday | 5:30 – 8:30pm | $215
March 12 – 14, 2018
Join celebrated artist Derek Chan in this hands-on workshop and discover the ancient art of paper marbling. Students will learn two approaches to this art form that honor both new and old techniques. The class will begin with methods inspired by European and Middle Eastern traditions, using modern acrylic paint on a carrageenan (seaweed extract) size. Students will also learn the art of sumi-nagashi and methods found throughout parts of Asia, using sumi-ink on cotton rag and handmade papers.
Next, students will use their marbled papers as powerful collage elements in contemporary art practices. Derek will help students explore how to use texture, imagery, abstraction and complex color in collage work. Finally, keeping these concepts in mind, students will create a functional work of art, that is meant to become part of their everyday life. Participants will leave with their own marbled creations and a one of a kind artwork.
This is a Visiting Artist class, therefore cancellations must be made at least 45 days in advance in order to qualify for a refund (less a $25 administrative fee)
