Judith Guest's first book, Ordinary People, published in 1976, was made into the 1980 film Ordinary People that won the Academy Award for Best Picture. In Ordinary People, the Jarrets are a typical American family. Calvin is a determined, successful provider and Beth an organized, efficient wife. They had two sons, Conrad and Buck, but now they have one. Guest takes the reader into their lives to share their misunderstandings, pain, and ultimate healing. Ordinary People is an extraordinary novel about an "ordinary" family divided by pain, yet bound by their struggle to heal.

Guest's most recent book, The Tarnished Eye (2004), is loosely based on a real unsolved crime in her native Michigan.

Guest will be in town visiting her granddaughter, who is a local resident, and helping to promote the American Foundation for Suicide PreventionColorado Chapter's Southwest Colorado Out of the Darkness Walk on Saturday, September 30th at 9:30 am (registration at 8:30 am). The movie Ordinary People will be shown at the library on Saturday, September 30th at 6:00 pm.
