Wilkinson Public Library is launching the region’s first community read program! For the inaugural program, WPL staff have chosen The Distance Between Us by Reyna Grande.

Free English language, Spanish language, and Young Reader editions of the book are available at the library while supplies last. Participants can keep the books.

Grande vividly brings to life her tumultuous early years in this “compelling . . . unvarnished, resonant” (BookPage) story of a childhood spent torn between two parents and two countries. As her parents make the dangerous trek across the Mexican border to “El Otro Lado” (The Other Side) in pursuit of the American dream, Reyna and her siblings are forced into the already overburdened household of their stern grandmother. When their mother at last returns, Reyna prepares for her own journey to “El Otro Lado” to live with the man who has haunted her imagination for years, her long-absent father.

Grande is the author of three critically acclaimed books. The Distance Between Us was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award and was hailed by the L.A. Times as “the Angela’s Ashes of the modern Mexican immigrant experience.”

The Library will host book discussions on Tuesday, September 26th at 6:00 pm, Tuesday, October 3rd at 12:00 pm and again at 6:00 pm in Spanish.

Come meet Reyna in person for a talk and signing on Wednesday, October 11th! She
has a presentation at 5:30 in Spanish and at 7:00 in English. In between, there will be a casual meet and greet.
