By William Shakespeare

We chose Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew because it is truly a comedy about people behaving badly. It is a story where men clamor around a young woman who isn’t really worth the fuss, making bigger asses of themselves and their entire sex in the process. A widowed father sells off his difficult daughter to the highest bidder. And two people, cast out and disrespected by society in their own rights, find a common bond in playing the game of love, all too roughly at times and more like a long con than a courtship. All of this is framed by the fact that the story is a play within a play performed for a drunk who has just been thrown out of a bar. In 2017, we need a Shrew to remind us that what we want, or how important we think we are is not as pressing as how we treat each other.
